New West Midlands Based Film

You may already know that Birmingham Salute has teamed up with director Matthew Carter for a new ‘Cinematic Documentary’ film based around the love stories of five Black Country people that walk the local canals. Luv’in the Black Country, which is set against the backdrop of the fading identity of the area and its culture, is being funded by Screen West Midlands and the UK Film Council under the annual Digi-Shorts scheme. The film will be touring the festival circuit later this year and into early 2011.

Make the move to Windows 7 and Adobe CS5

We all know that technology rapidly changes day in day out, which causes many issues when buying systems for a business.
About a year ago we upgraded from Windows XP running Adobe CS2 to Vista 64bit running Adobe CS4. While CS4 is great software it seems to be riddled with bugs, and I’d rather not go into the issues with Vista as I’m sure many of you are familiar with this very long list.

Pure Magic!
About a month ago I purchased a beautiful Sony Vaio for home use running Windows 7. From the moment I used Microsoft’s new baby I knew it was pure magic. I’ve now been pushing MD Andy for a move to Windows 7 but the problem being that it doesn’t work too well with CS4. This is where Adobe CS5 comes in, as it is supposedly natively 64bit and designed for Windows 7. I am hoping that production bliss awaits on the other side of this rainbow of upgrades.

Netherlands to win?

Being a core England fan it was very difficult for me to continue to watch the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. However I managed to pick myself up and find new hope in another favourite of mine, Japan. Ok so they went out, but what a great performance against Denmark. After picking myself up for a second time I looked towards Brazil, then Ghana, then Argentina! How is this happening?

Last night I thought right, Uruguay are my new favourite and I had complete and utter faith in them. Their defeat was made even more hurtful knowing that when I was to come in to work this morning, Managing Director Andy would be sitting as smug as ever ready to gloat that his team has won yet another match.

So what do I do? Support Germany, Spain or Netherlands? Seems that whoever I support goes out, so maybe it’s time to try a bit of reverse psychology on, well, myself! I am now officially supporting Netherlands….i think?

As if the world cup isn’t giving me enough troubles, CS4 and Vista are playing up now.

Shooting from a bike

We’re now firmly accustomed to our new gear and the calibre of work that comes with this great power (I have been watching spiderman over the weekend). We’ve recently teamed up with Birmingham based web pros Ice Blue Marketing to offer a web/video combo for UKBPS. As I say to every client, no idea is too big for us, however I hadn’t considered sitting backwards on a motorbike with both hands on a camera! But hey, the job required it so I guess I stepped up. I never thought I’d say this but It’s a good job the managing director is a biker.

Anyway, we’re now in the post production stages and while we’re putting the final touches on that project, we’re getting ready to put on our filmmakers hats for a UK Film Council funded documentary.

Life in HD is fast, but we love it!

Birmingham Salute: Canon 5D Mk II

Since the start of 2010 work has been pouring in, hence the fact that this is the first post in quite a while. Suffice to say this has seen an increase in our budget, so we’ve decided to go on a little spending spree. As you can see from the image, we are now using the much talked about Canon 5D Mk II that is currently being championed by cinematographers and filmmakers such as Philip Bloom and Vincent Laforet.

I know what you’re thinking, ‘that’s just a stills camera!’, but you know what they say about assumptions. The 5D Mk II actually captures the most impressive video we’ve seen, and compared to even the biggest and most expensive camcorders, the 5D provides the visual equivalent of Usain Bolt on a 100m track! Full frame, full HD video shot at 1080p.

We recently went out on a shoot to the Sandwell Council Headquarters and came back with this very impressive footage:

I hope everyone had a good time during the recent holidays. As for us we’ve been as busy as ever, as you can guess by the lack of recent posts! We are now entering a new year, and with that comes a new look to Birmingham Salute.

Our website has had a complete makeover and we are ecstatic about it. I hope you all enjoy our new set of suave videos on each page (don’t forget to check out the one on the site map – sort of an Easter egg).

What’s the best way to market my business?

Hello All,

I’ve just sneaked out of a video shoot from the rest of the guys to update our blog. Why? Read on……

Often in this industry the first thing clients usually ask me during an initial meeting is ‘what’s the best way to market my business?’ In fact I recently spoke with the owner of a children’s theme park in the Midlands, and her concern was just that. My response is simple, web videos and blogging! With internet speeds being as lightning fast as they are, a web video is no longer confined to poor quality and small frame sizes. A blog is one of the most advanced and powerful tools you can get your hands on and it’s free! Put these two together and you have a match made in promotional heaven.

Now granted, a lot of us have become a lot more careful with our budgets, but cutting out promotion during this period of financial unrest is bad for all businesses. The key is to find more cost effective ways of promotion, and low input/high impact is crucial to success.

So here’s the trick, get yourself or your company a blog and start posting once a week (you can usually get a free blog from places like wordpress, blogspot and many others, just google free blog). You can post anything on your blog including news, press releases, everyday goings on, personal accounts of a good job well done etc.. Then once a month embed a video from youtube, promoting an event, a press release or your company in general….you get the idea? Make sure that posting is a regular occurrence. Now already you are all over the web, and regular posts will excite google because it loves constantly changing and updated content. Potential customers like to see the human side behind all of the marketing speak and corporate jargon, so make sure your blog content is written with that personal touch.
